The Mahabharata and the Manu Samhita list by name and formation many vyūhas ('battle formations'), some were small in size and others, complex and gigantic, such as :
~Ardha-chandra-vyūha or Chandrakala-vyūha ('crescent moon or curved blade formation')
Used on the 16th Day Battle in Mahabharata War, by the Pandavas.
~Chakra-vyūha (also called Padmavyuha) ('circular formation')
A large formation was devised by the Kauravas in which Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna, was trapped never to emerge alive.
The deadliest formation ever known, wherein the opponent is made to enter the formation but will soon tire out fighting constantly changing opponents. Only who know the way out are advised to enter, else it is suicidal. Used on the 13th Day of Battle in Mahabharata War, by the Kauravas.
~Garbha-vyūha ('womb-shaped or uterus formation')
~Makara-vyuha ('crocodile formation')
adopted by Bhishma of Kauravas on the 16th Day Battle in Mahabharata War.
~Mandala vyuha ('galaxy formation')
~Oormi vyuha ('ocean or waveform formation')
~Shakata-vyūha ('cart-shaped or box formation')
Used on the 14th Day Battle in Mahabharata War, by the Kauravas
~Sarvatobhadra-vyūha ('grand formation')
~Suchi-vyūha ('needle-shaped formation')
~Shyena-vyuha (also called Garuda Vyuh) ('eagle formation').
At the commencement of the Kurukshetra War which lasted for eighteen days, the Pandavas, being aware that Bhishma stood protected by the "makara vyuha" and was ready for battle, they had adopted the invincible "sheyna vyuha" with Bhima leading stationed at the mouth and Arjuna stationed at the neck of the bird-shaped vyuha, and Yudhishthira patrolling the rear.
~Vajra-vyūha ('diamond or thuderbolt formation')
was large a three-fold formation of warriors.
~Krauncha-vyūha ('heron crane formation')
Military formation on a pattern supposed to resemble a heron or a crane with outstretched beak and spreading wings.
Used on the 2nd Day Battle of Mahabharata War, by the Pandavas.
~Asura-vyūha ('god/demon head formation')
Used on the 10th Day Battle in Mahabharata War, by the Kauravas in defence of the Pandava's Deva-vyūha formation.
~Mandala-vyūha ('galactic microcosm formation')
~Trishula-vyūha ('trident formation')
~Kurma-vyūha ('turtle formation')
Used for a forward push on enemy defences and against an Arrow Storm with a Battle Sheath. None in this formation are exposed to outside attacks.
~Deva-vyūha ('divine formation')
Used on the 10th Day Battle in Mahabharata War, by the Pandavas.
~Mala-vyūha ('garland formation')
~Srigantaka-vyūha ('horned formation')
Mostly resembles a Bull-Horn shaped charging formation.
~Kamala-vyūha ('lotus blossom formation')
Lotus blossom like formation in a constant churning motion, protecting a high-value target inside, against enemy advances.
~Sarpa-vyūha ('snake's motion formation')
Used against an opponent's Garuda-vyūha ('Eagle-formation')
